DECARBONISATION & GOING GREEN IN THE MINING SECTOR

“Climate change is one of the most pressing societal issues the globe is facing and all of us, including the mining industry, need to reduce emissions urgently. It is the right thing to do and this is at the core of who we are and what we aspire to be. And it makes economic and financial sense – renewables are cheaper than carbon-base energy sources.”

SUCCESS STORIES

In 2008, Ubuntu Fields set up two independent though interconnected trusts through which to disburse resources and support the communities in the various municipal wards neighbouring the Congo Kivu operation, as well as those from labour-sending areas. The trusts are part of Ubunti Fields’s Black Economic Empowerment ownership structure and receive annual dividend income from the mines in East Africa. Each Trust has a specific scope of work that is ultimately intended to empower communities to be self-sufficient for a prosperous living.

WATER

Access to clean water is a fundamental human right and a vital resource for Ubuntu Fields’s mining and ore processing activities. With East Africa not being a water-stressed environment, responsible water stewardship ensures security of supply to all our operation. Managing our impact on and access to water is also essential to maintaining our social licence to operate, as water is a critical resource for many of our host communities.

ENERGY

As one of the world’s deepest mines, gold mining at Ubuntu Fields is very energy intensive. With a life of mine of over 80 years ahead of us, Ubuntu Fields is laying plans to shift away from the use of carbon-intensive energy sources, in particular renewable energy. It has been our intention for some time to build a solar energy generating facility at all our mines in East Africa mainly in DRC mines with a 50MW capacity. This is currently pending regulatory approval.

DUSTS

East Africa’s mining industry regulations set targets for the amount of silica dust our employees are exposed to. We are making good and steady progress in improving our engineering controls to achieve the set targets daily..
